Speaking of work..
I kind of want to make a pop quiz to give our tech support team. Something very basic. It would go something like this:
One of the students currently in class messages you saying that she is having problems with her video. You see that her network speed is very low. Do you…
A. ..tell her the problem is her network and go back to reading reddit – there’s nothing you can do.
B. …tell her to restart her computer even though it won’t help and will make her miss even more class than she would otherwise.
C. …wait until she disconnects completely and then email her parents the standard “you disappeared, we don’t know what’s wrong” email.
D. …interrupt class to troubleshoot the issue.
E. …tell her how she can quickly fix whatever can be fixed quickly, then send an email to her parents informing them of the problem and offering concrete suggestions, then log the issue in the spreadsheet so that there is a record of it. And so that when my boss’s boss comes up to me and asks if I have figured out yet what caused the issues we had yesterday, I don’t have to say What issues?
(#the thing with my boss's boss happened this morning#i was strongly tempted to loudly shout#WHAT THE FUCK#or to send that support person a strongly worded email#luckily our mutual boss did it for me#aka my mother#i've mentioned that my mom is my boss#right?#ARRRGGGHHHH#thank goodness this doesn't happen often)
